PREP BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Sophomore Pitcher Helps Troy Upset No. 8 Fullerton

Sophomore Rick Parmenter pitched 6 1/3 innings for his first victory and Brent Lacher got the final two outs as Troy upset eighth-ranked Fullerton, 2-1, in a Freeway League baseball game Friday at Troy.

Parmenter (1-3), struck out three, gave up five hits and walked one for Troy (6-10, 4-4). The Warriors took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, on an RBI groundout by Brian Burchit and a RBI single by Rich Richie.

David Chacon had an RBI double in the fifth inning for Fullerton (12-6, 7-2).

In another Freeway League game:

Buena Park 6, La Habra 3--La Habra had the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh, but reliever Alfredo Garcia got the last out for Buena Park (7-8, 4-4).

In the Century League:

Foothill 11, El Modena 4--Chris Jordan had three hits and two RBIs, and Rob Higby had three hits and an RBI, and scored three runs for Foothill (13-5, 7-1).

Santa Ana Valley 4, Orange 3--Martin Ortega had an RBI double to tie it, 2-2, and later stole home to give host Santa Ana Valley (8-11, 4-5) a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning. Cesar Correa had an RBI single in the inning for Santa Ana Valley. Orange is 4-13-1, 1-7-1.

Villa Park 6, Canyon 5 (9 innings)--Keyvan Pejouhian scored on Jarrod Kula’s wild pitch with two outs in the top of the ninth for Villa Park (7-10-2, 4-5).

Canyon, limited to three hits by Scott Henderson (2-2), scored four times in the bottom of the seventh, combining a single, two walks, Matt Kastelic’s two-run double and Kastelic’s steal of home to tie the score. Rob Ortiz had a two-run double in the fifth for Villa Park.

In the Empire League:

El Dorado 5, Esperanza 0--Bobby Ponce tripled with two outs in the seventh inning, breaking up Shawn Holcomb’s no-hitter. Holcomb (5-1) then struck out the next batter, finishing with a one-hitter and 10 strikeouts at Cal State Fullerton.

Tyson DowDell had a double and two singles and drove in a run for El Dorado (14-5, 7-2).

Katella 10, Loara 3--Orlando Gonzalez had a triple for host Katella (11-8, 6-3).

Los Alamitos 18, Cypress 2--Rob Crenshaw was four for four and drove in four runs during a 14-run fourth inning for the host Griffins (9-11, 3-6).

Garrett Vitale hit a two-run homer in the second for Cypress (12-8, 6-3).

John Daugherty was four for five for Los Alamitos.

In the Garden Grove League:

Kennedy 3, Garden Grove 2--Scott Jones (5-2) pitched a five-hitter and got out of a seventh-inning jam for host Kennedy (14-5, 6-2). Garden Grove had two runs in, two on and two out, but Jones got a groundout to end the game.

La Quinta 12, Los Amigos 0--Amador Martinez had three hits, scored two runs and drove in one for La Quinta (12-6-1, 5-3). Mike Grace had two hits and drove in two and Jose Trejo had two hits, scored three times and drove in two for La Quinta.

Rancho Alamitos 4, Pacifica 2--Erin Winemiller’s three-run first inning homer keyed a four-run inning and Marshall Brown (4-2) pitched a three-hitter, striking out nine, for the host Vaqueros (5-9, 3-5).

Santiago 8, Bolsa Grande 6--Balfred Guzman had an RBI and scored a run for host Santiago (10-9, 4-4). Guzman (4-3) also pitched four innings for the victory.

In the Olympic League:

Orange Lutheran 7, Whittier Christian 2--J.P. Presley singled in two runs during a five-run fifth inning for the Lancers (13-4, 5-2).

Presley’s single was his 82nd hit during his four-year varsity career, breaking Phil Matheson’s school record set last season.

In the Orange League:

Brea-Olinda 9, Western 4--Matt Priess and Kyle Grubbs each had three hits and Matt Selinske drove in two runs for the visiting Brea (13-5-1, 8-1).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Century 3, Estancia 1--Chris Chamberlain’s fifth-inning sacrifice fly drove in winning pitcher Tommy Reimers (4-4) with the tie-breaking run, and Eric Valenica’s single drove in George Barragon with an insurance run later in the inning for the visiting Centurions (5-11, 3-5).

Laguna Beach 5, Costa Mesa 3--Jason Abraham went two for three with two runs scored and a home run. Abraham, a senior, also came in relief in the seventh and struck out the side for Laguna Beach (5-12, 4-5).

Trabuco Hills 10, Laguna Hills 3--The Mustangs (11-7, 8-1) scored seven runs in the second inning, three on a bases-loaded double by catcher T.J. Alvarez.

In the Sunset League:

Westminster 4, Santa Ana 1--Winning pitcher Keith Cowley (2-2) homered in the third inning and Jason Fabisiak drove in Jason Hall with a double later in the inning for the host Lions (11-10, 4-3).
