The 11th running of the La Jolla Half Marathon starts at 7:30 a.m. Sunday on the Del Mar Race Track. The course winds through Del Mar, climbs a hill through Torrey Pines State Park, and finishes at La Jolla Cove. Two additional races, one five miles, the other two, will be held in conjunction with the 13.1-mile main event.
James Shermeta and Laura Stuart won last year’s race, which attracted about 3,000 runners. More than $6,000 in prizes will be awarded to participants in a random bib drawing.
There is a $500 cash prize for the top male and female runners if they break the records. In 1989, Steve McCormick set the standard of 1 hour, 7.16 seconds. Erin Baker, a world triathlon champion, set the women’s record of 1:16.52 in 1990.
