Montebello : Fund-Raising Events Set

A concert by the rock group War and a Spanish-language musical are among the fund-raising events planned in a community campaign to save extracurricular programs in the Montebello Unified School District.

The goal is to raise $300,000 needed to keep alive programs such as band practice, sports, debate and the school newspaper and yearbook. The school board slashed funding for these and other activities and numerous jobs and programs as part of a $9-million budget-cutting plan to stave off bankruptcy.

“It’s absolutely one of the best things that has happened during this crisis,” said Supt. Darlene Robles of the communitywide effort after a meeting last week with parents, business leaders and politicians.
