‘Chinese People’ Did Go to Polls

In analyzing the defeat of the candidate he endorsed in the April 14 Monterey Park City Council election, Monterey Park Mayor Sam Kiang lamented that “Chinese don’t vote. They just don’t vote.” (Times, April 16).
I take strong exception to that characterization, not only because it is completely false, but because Mayor Kiang operates under the misconception that all Chinese-Americans vote along ethnic lines.
The voters of Monterey Park (including Chinese-American voters) are a little more intelligent than Mayor Kiang gives them credit.
The voters made their decision and elected Judy Chu and Rita Valenzuela, two eminently qualified and experienced leaders who demonstrated their talents to the electorate in Monterey Park.
I, for one, voted in that election and am quite happy and satisfied with the results.
