Praise for Atkinson
San Diegans should breathe a collective sigh of relief that Richard Atkinson was passed over as president of the University of California system. His very considerable intellectual and academic leadership talents would have been badly wasted in a position that is essentially political in nature.
Intellectual and academic leadership in the University of California system is provided not by the president’s office, but by the chancellors of the individual campuses. In Atkinson, San Diego has, by far, the best of the current crop of UC chancellors. We are indeed fortunate that he is staying in San Diego.
