Visit to Skid Row

The removal of the homeless and the street people before Barbara Bush’s arrival in the neighborhood is indicative of what is wrong in this country (“First Lady Gets Tour of Spruced Up Skid Row,” April 17).
Mrs. Bush is a very strong and compassionate person and I hope a mature adult. Shielding her from the tragedy on our city streets does not make sense. If she is not allowed to see the downside of people, how is she going to carry the correct message to the President? Obviously he either needs someone to call his attention to this or he is choosing not to worry about it.
When the President cannot find the money to address these problems, how can he find the money to squander overseas, for example, or for his enormously expensive drug program, a failure, or his sending money to Iraq up until Desert Storm?
Help should begin at home.
