Defending the Family
Ruth Rosen very aptly describes how the term “family values” becomes a threatening one in the hands of the Bush Administration (Column Left, “ ‘Family Values’ Is a GOP Code for Meanness,” April 21). She points out the difference between the family aid the Bush Administration wants to provide (“demonizing welfare mothers, denouncing welfare cheats . . . and trying to abolish abortion”) and the type of aid that would truly help the families of today (“job security, paid family leave, health care, affordable housing”).
One of the most important statements in her article, however, is the very last sentence warning Democrats not to concede the defense of the family to the GOP.
