Employment Costs Rise 4.0%: American workers’ wages, salaries and benefits rose 4.0% in the year ended March 31, the U.S. Labor Department said. The department’s employment cost index, considered one of the best gauges of wage inflation pressures, was down from the 4.6% jump in the year ending March, 1991. The report should reduce inflation worries for the Federal Reserve and give the central bank more leeway to lower interest rates if needed to keep the recovery alive.
