An 18-year-old man died Tuesday when his car ran off Interstate 805 and plummeted 160 feet into a canyon, the California Highway Patrol said.
The accident occurred about 1:09 p.m. on the southbound lanes between La Jolla Village Drive and Governor Drive, according to Officer Jackie Sturges.
The driver, whose name was withheld pending notification of relatives, suddenly swerved off the freeway shoulder at a point where the freeway crosses a deep canyon. The car hit a power line before landing on abandoned railroad tracks, Sturges said.
The man was thrown from the car and declared dead at the scene, Sturges said. Investigators are still trying to determine why the car went out of control.
