Pierce Advances in Tennis, Volleyball Tournaments

Lee Bradford had 15 kills and Robert Beard added 14 to power Pierce College to a 15-12, 15-2, 15-8 victory over visiting Irvine Valley in the championship match of the Southern regional of the state volleyball tournament on Tuesday.
Pierce (15-3) will play Orange Coast in the first round of the eight-team state tournament at Palomar College in San Marcos on Friday.
The Brahmas defeated Grossmont, 15-7, 15-11, 15-6 in their first match Tuesday, and Irvine Valley followed with a 15-11, 16-14, 15-11 victory over El Camino.
Beard had 17 kills against Grossmont and Bradford added 13.
In a matchup of teams ranked among the top 10 in the state, Pierce defeated Saddleback, 5 1/2-3 1/2, at Long Beach City College to advance to the semifinal round of the Southern California Community College men’s tennis regionals.
The Brahmas will next play Grossmont, ranked fourth in the state, Monday at a site to be determined.
Pierce (19-1) is ranked seventh by a coaches’ board. Saddleback is ranked eighth.
