DANA POINT : 2 Music Groups Awarded City Funds

More than $11,000 in city funds were awarded to two community-based musical organizations by the City Council this week.
Based on recommendations from the city’s Cultural Commission, the council on Tuesday granted $7,525 to the Capistrano Valley Symphony and $4,000 to the Master Chorale of Orange County.
Two groups that applied for but were not awarded grants, the Orange County Marine Institute and the South Orange County Community Theatre, were asked to submit more information on their budgets to the council. The marine institute has asked the council for $6,550 and the theater group, which presents a popular, annual outdoor Shakespeare production in Dana Point each summer, requested $5,000.
The Doheny Longboard Assn., a surfers’ group based at Doheny State Beach, had asked for $8,100 to produce a documentary video about the history of surfing in Dana Point, but the council turned down its request on the recommendation of the commission. Commission Chairman Wendy Lockwood-Larson said the panel was supportive of the surfers’ association’s efforts but thought it needed a better grant request package.
“It was a hard decision, but we didn’t think they were ready,” Lockwood-Larson said. “We hope they resubmit their application.”
The city offers funds to cultural groups twice a year, in the spring and the fall.
