West Hollywood : Police Initiative Bid Proceeds

City Clerk Mary Tyson on Monday confirmed that a group pushing for an independent police department had submitted enough signatures to put the matter on the November ballot.

City Atty. Michael Jenkins said that he plans to study the proposed initiative to determine whether it is legal and will probably report to the City Council in August.

The city contracts with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for law enforcement, although Wednesday it shifted parking enforcement to a private company in hopes of saving an estimated $350,000.

West Hollywood Citizens for Better Police Protection, which sponsored the ballot measure, argues that a city department would give residents more control over law enforcement and staffing. Critics, including much of the city’s political Establishment, claim that a switch would be too expensive.
