LAGOS, Nigeria — Results Monday from National Assembly elections appeared to boost the military’s tightly controlled program for returning Nigeria to civilian rule.
The left-leaning Social Democrats, one of two parties created by the military--which also wrote their political platforms--took 304 of 589 seats in the House and 46 of 91 in the Senate, beating the Republican Convention party, unofficial results showed.
The military has yet to spell out the powers of the Assembly, which is to take office in January.
