Toro Pitcher Signs With the Phillies

Cal State Dominguez Hills pitcher Mark Tranberg, who earned NCAA Division II All-America honors in 1991, has signed a contract with the Philadelphia Phillies.
Tranberg, who was drafted in the 35th round of the June major league draft, has been assigned to Batavia, a rookie league farm team in the New York-Penn League.
In two seasons at Dominguez Hills, Tranberg was 16-9 with a 3.17 earned-run average. Tranberg, the 12th Toro to sign with a major league team in the past six seasons, had his best season in 1991 when he finished 11-3.
Pitcher Anne Ibarra of the Cal State Dominguez Hills women’s softball team was selected to the GTE Academic All-America third team by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Ibarra, a senior, finished the 1992 season with a 17-11 record and 0.65 ERA, which ranked eighth in NCAA Division II. She holds eight school pitching records, including three career no-hitters, two of which came last season against Christ College Irvine and San Francisco State.
Ibarra, who has a 3.52 grade-point average, is majoring in athletic training.
Girls in grades five through 12 are eligible to participate in the Loyola Marymount girls’ volleyball camp July 27-31 at Gersten Pavilion.
The cost is $200 and includes a T-shirt, lunch and a personal skills video.
The camp will be directed by Loyola Marymount women’s volleyball Coach Steve Stratos.
The deadline is the first day of camp or as space permits.

Loyola Marymount will be the site of the Jamie C. Sanchez tennis camp for boys and girls age 8-16 from Aug. 3-7.
There will be morning and afternoon sessions.
The cost is $130 and includes a T-shirt for one session or $225 including a T-shirt and lunch for both sessions.

Registration is under way for the 1992 International Surf Festival from July 30 through Aug. 2 in Manhattan Beach.
The event will include competition between lifeguards from the United States and Australia at 10 a.m. July 30 and 31 at the Manhattan Beach Pier.
Events for non-lifeguards will include volleyball, body surfing and a beach run.
Forms are available at chamber of commerce offices in Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Torrance and Redondo Beach and the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors.
