Squirming at the Theater

Sylvie Drake suggested in her review of Sybille Pearson’s “Unfinished Stories” that because the play was gripping it “is mercifully played without an intermission, despite its nearly two-hour length” (“Richly Layered, Powerful ‘Stories,’ ” June 26).

I beg to differ. Any play that runs longer than 45 minutes can often be torture to those theater lovers who, because of various physical ailments, cannot sit for two uninterrupted hours. If “Hamlet” and “Death of a Salesman” can remain gripping with intermissions, I am quite sure “Unfinished Stories” can as well.

Please, dear playwrights and producers, give us a break and an intermission.
