The Italian media said doctors have found a tumor in Pope John Paul II’s large intestine, but their sources differed on whether it was cancerous. Spokesman Joaquin Navarro refused to confirm the reports, which said the Pope is to undergo surgery. State-run RAI television cited medical sources as saying the Pope has a malignant colon tumor, although one of the least serious kinds. Earlier, the Italian news agency ANSA, citing unidentified hospital sources, said the Pope has a benign colon tumor. If caught early, colon cancer is treatable.
