Jimmy Arias, a two-time finalist in the NationsBank Classic but a qualifier this year, won his first-round match in Washington on a court where temperatures reached 108 degrees.
Arias, who defeated Chris Pridham, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, had to earn his way into the main draw last weekend despite his past success in the tournament.
“Wild cards are a big political thing. ProServ runs this tournament, and I’m not a ProServ client, so I didn’t get one,” said Arias, whose world ranking has slipped to 250.
Next up for Spain is Canada, which spoiled South Africa’s first appearance in 15 years with a 2-1 victory.
