From Times Staff and Wire Reports
A San Diego sheriff’s deputy was given a 30-day suspension without pay for refusing to join hundreds of other officers called to riot duty in Los Angeles last April. Deputy Carla Heringer, 35, has told superiors she objected to the riot duty because of mounting stress caused by a recent injury to one of her children and the illness of her father, who died a few days after the assignment, according to Sheriff’s Department sources. Heringer, a nine-year veteran, has asked for an appeal of the suspension.
