Miklos Nemeth, former Hungarian Olympic champion, defended his record-setting new javelin design against charges that it violates international rules. Czechoslovak Jan Zelezny used the new model to set a world record of 310 feet 10 inches in Oslo on July 4.
Eero Uotila, projects chief at the Finnish Sports Federation, has said the new javelin’s removable carbon fiber shell, which reduces vibration in the air, violates IAAF requirements that a javelin have only three parts. Nemeth said the IAAF has not ruled whether the javelin conforms to its rules.
