South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa has been recommended for a $50,000 California Arts Council Challenge grant but may never get it. The council meeting at which the grant was to have been approved has been postponed from this Friday to September because a new state budget has not yet been signed. The CAC Challenge program, which supports innovative artistic and administrative efforts, may be severely cut or even dissolved because legislators have recommended trimming the CAC’s budget by as much as 10%, according to Gloria Woodlock, CAC Challenge program manager. SCR would use the money for a planned Nexus Program to develop multicultural plays. The Historical and Cultural Foundation of Orange County also applied for a grant but failed to qualify, Woodlock said.
