Whittier : Hot Line Brings Results in ‘Shop Whittier’ Campaign

A telephone hot line to encourage residents to shop locally is a success, officials said this week.
Between 80 to 100 people a week have called the toll-free “Shop Whittier” hot line since it started four months ago, said Virginia Hultman, a coordinator for the marketing program. Residents can call (800) 773--1BUY to learn where to buy specific merchandise locally. Staff members from the Chamber of Commerce operate the phone lines Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The service is part of a $10,000 “Shop Whittier” campaign that began March 15. It also includes posters, flyers and advertisements promoting the benefits of shopping locally. One of the biggest advantages is that local purchases produce sales tax revenues that the city uses to provide services, officials said.
The campaign is part of a 3-year-old effort to support existing businesses and attract new ones. The 1992--93 budget for the program is $80,000.
