California’s Budget Crisis
A small but important point in regard to your Democratic National Convention story (July 17), in which you suggest that Treasurer Kathleen Brown remained in New York in the absence of progress on state budget negotiations.
For the record, the treasurer was back on the job in Sacramento by noon on Wednesday after meeting Tuesday with New York rating agencies. Her plan all along had been to return to California by midweek to brief the governor and legislators on her meetings.
Sadly, events required that she also announce a sharp downgrade in the state’s credit rating due to the continuing budget impasse. Treasurer Brown has since called on Gov. Wilson to immediately reconvene meetings with the legislative leadership as a first step in restoring Wall Street confidence in California.
