Dennis Koslowski stayed on course for another Greco-Roman medal with two victories in the preliminaries, including one in the first round over 1988 gold medalist Andrzej Wronski of Poland.
“Two more wins and I think I’ll be in the finals,” Koslowski said after beating South Korea’s Song Sung Il, 2-0, in the 220-pound class.
The 32-year-old from St. Louis Park, Minn., is trying to become America’s first two-time medalist in Greco-Roman. He had been 0-5 against Wronski. Koslowski’s scheduled second-round opponent, Sweden’s Jorgen Olsson, withdrew because of an injury and was replaced by Song.
In other matches involving Americans, Rodney Smith of Ft. Benning, Ga., beat Spain’s Pedro Villuela, 6-1, at 149 1/2 pounds. Olympic champion Jon Ronningen of Norway defeated Shawn Sheldon of Albany, N.Y., 5-0, in the 114 1/2-pound class. Sheldon, a silver medalist in last year’s World Championships, is 1-1.
