BONN — Investigators sifting through Communist files say at least 350 people died trying to flee the former East Germany--nearly twice the previously documented number, a top official said Monday.

Some of the victims drowned in previously unreported attempts to swim to freedom across the Baltic Sea, Kittlaus said.
