In the preliminary round, Cuba routed Italy, 18-1, and Japan defeated Spain, 12-1, to remain unbeaten and tied with the United States at the top of the standings, each with a 2-0 record. The top four teams will advance to the medal round in the eight-team tournament.
In the other game, Puerto Rico (1-1) beat the Dominican Republic, 7-5. Spain, Italy and the Dominican Republic are 0-2.
