Gasoline Prices Higher: Gasoline prices rose 0.3 cent this week as a new additive required in 39 cities made the fuel more expensive, the American Automobile Assn. reported. The average price of self-serve regular unleaded was $1.161 per gallon, the weekly national survey of gasoline stations showed. Prices rose in all regions of the country, AAA said. Service stations in cities with high levels of carbon monoxide--including Los Angeles--were required to begin selling gasoline blended with oxygenates--additives made from either methanol or ethanol that reduce the level of carbon monoxide emissions. Many experts had predicted that gas prices in the areas affected would rise 3 cents to 5 cents per gallon because of the requirement.
