NHL ROUNDUP : 55-Foot Shot Helps Capitals Tie

Calle Johansson’s 55-foot slap shot with 7:50 left in regulation Friday night gave the Washington Capitals a 2-2 tie with Tampa Bay at Landover, Md., foiling the Lightning’s bid to win two in a row for the first time.

All the scoring came on power-play goals. Steve Konowalchuk had one for Washington, and Chris Kontos and Brian Bradley scored for expansion Tampa Bay, which has six power-play goals in its last three games.

Tampa Bay lost leads of 1-0 and 2-1, so there was little satisfaction in the tie--even though it snapped the Lightning’s four-game road losing streak.

Edmonton 6, Winnipeg 1--Peter Klima and Bernie Nicholls each scored two goals and Dave Manson added two assists for the Oilers at Winnipeg.

Edmonton has won four in a row after winning only one in its first 10 games. The Jets lost their fourth in a row.

Detroit 5, Hartford 2--Mark Howe had three assists at Detroit, and goaltender Vince Riendeau won his fourth game in a row. Riendeau, Tim Cheveldae’s backup, made 20 saves, including several tough stops in the final five minutes.

Vancouver 4, Ottawa 1--The expansion Senators remained winless for the 13th consecutive game as the Canucks won at Vancouver.

Ottawa (1-12-1) has not won since its upset of the Montreal Canadiens on opening night Nov. 8.

Vancouver’s Pavel Bure scored twice, his 12th and 13th goals.
