COMMUNITY COLLEGES
After two victories over winless opponents, the Glendale College football team takes a six-game winning streak into Saturday’s Western State Conference game against Harbor.
Glendale improved its record to 7-1 and 6-1 in the WSC with a 75-0 victory over Compton Saturday. It was the Vaqueros largest margin of victory since an 80-0 victory over Harbor in 1962.
“I was in a state of shock,” Glendale Coach John Cicuto said in regard to his team’s play against Compton. “Your concern in a game like that is whether your kids will play up against a team that isn’t very good.
“Our kids, to their credit, came out to play.”
Glendale rolled up 392 yards against a Compton team that was trying to gain the school’s first victory since 1989. The Vaqueros forced eight turnovers, including four interceptions, two by Vance Mitchell.
Glendale running back Pathon Rucker gained 110 yards in eight carries and scored two touchdowns. Angel Martinez caught four passes for 79 yards and two touchdowns.
Glendale meets Harbor (6-2), which lost to Moorpark, 35-8, Saturday.
“This week, we’ll see how good we really are,” Cicuto said. “Harbor has a lot of weapons they can hurt you with.
“But our kids should have all kinds of motivation because now you’re talking about a chance to not only to win a division, but possibly a conference championship.”
The Glendale men’s soccer team, ranked 15th in the state, plays host Friday to fifth-ranked Santa Barbara in its final WSC game. Glendale improved to 8-2-3 and 7-1-2 in the WSC last week with a 2-1 victory over Mission.
