Norwalk : Parents of Nuffer Children to Vote on Year-Round Plan

Parents whose children attend Nuffer Elementary School in Norwalk will be asked to vote on whether students should attend school year-round beginning in the 1993-94 academic year.

Parents may cast ballots during school hours from Nov. 18 to 24, Principal Myron Morper said. They also may vote from 5 to 8 p.m. Nov. 19.

The year-round schedule calls for instruction for three months, followed by a one-month vacation. The Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District already has implemented a year-round schedule at Glazier and Walnut elementary schools, both in Norwalk.

“It’s been tried in other schools in the district, and they found that the students did better after having shorter vacation periods,” Morper said.

The biggest problem parents at the other schools had, Morper said, was “the lifestyle change, the fact that school would begin a few weeks earlier than the usual time.” But he said that parents adjusted to the schedule.

Results of the vote will be forwarded to the district board early in December. If at least 80% of the parents support the change, Morper said, he will recommend that the new schedule begin in August, 1993.
