Bakir Allen, a 6-foot-4 basketball guard at Crossroads High, announced Friday that he plans to enroll at UC Santa Barbara in the fall.
“I don’t think he could envision living in the Midwest,” Crossroads Coach Daryl Roper said. “He wants to be closer to home and he thinks he has a better chance of playing right away at Santa Barbara.”
Allen is the second Crossroads player to sign with an NCAA Division I school. Forward Austin Croshere will enroll at Providence.
Fairfax High basketball player Robert Foster is eager to play for Indiana Coach Bobby Knight.
Foster, a 6-foot-4, guard, visited the campus Saturday and made a commitment earlier this week. He averaged 13.5 points, 5.5 assists and five rebounds a game last season.
“They just got through practice and Knight asked if he was still interested,” Fairfax Coach Harvey Kitani said. “They offered him a scholarship and he accepted.”
Foster also received word last week that he will be eligible to compete as a freshman after scoring above the NCAA minimum on the Scholastic Aptitude Test.
Foster, who also considered Oregon State and Cal State Long Beach, is the second player from Fairfax to sign with a Big Ten school. Sean Higgins signed with Michigan in 1987 after receiving a release from UCLA.
Harvard-Westlake High girls’ volleyball team finished with an 11-1 record and won the Mission League championship, its first league championship in 10 years.
Co-captain Laura Wolf, a senior outside hitter, and setter Lindsay Powers were the team’s top offensive players. Wolf had 112 kills to lead Harvard-Westlake.
The Wolverine defense has been led by outside hitter Hillary Gross and back row specialist Angie Wong.
“We’ve been playing great defense,” Coach King Schofield said. “We expect to go deep in the playoffs.”
Harvard-Westlake’s only loss in league came against runner-up Bishop Montgomery.
St. Monica High running back Chris Henderson has scored 10 touchdowns, four more than the Mariners scored as a team in 1991.
Henderson rushed for 286 yards in 16 carries and four touchdowns in a 35-21 victory over Cantwell-Sacred Heart last week. He had touchdown runs of 35, 65, 47 and 24 yards.
Venice High’s Brian Rivera has signed a letter of intent to play volleyball for Cal State Northridge.
Rivera, a 6-foot-4 middle blocker, was selected to the All-City Section team and helped the Gondoliers win the 3-A Division championship last season. Rivera also plays basketball for the Gondoliers.
