NEWPORT, R.I. — Navy Secretary Sean O’Keefe has approved a plan to consolidate the Navy’s Surface Warfare Officer School here, merging the Coronado Naval Amphibious Base school with the Newport school by May, 1994.
The schools train surface naval officers at various career stages ranging from newly commissioned ensigns to commanding officers. The Coronado school trains only division officers. Newport trains officers at all levels.
Under the consolidation, the Newport school would acquire more than $1 million in information technology equipment from the Coronado base, as well as roughly $412,000 for upgrading facilities.
The move also could add as many as 400 students a year in Newport.
