ROUNDUP : Garcia Spurs Antelope Valley to 71-57 Victory Over Sequoias

The Antelope Valley College men’s basketball team won its third game in as many outings Wednesday night, rolling to a 71-57 nonconference victory over visiting Sequoias.
Mario Garcia, a 6-foot-11 freshman center from Spain, scored a game-high 24 points for the Marauders. Teammates Darnell Cherry and John Puckett each added 10 points. Cherry also had a team-high seven rebounds.
Annan Houston scored 11 points to lead Sequoias (2-2).

Long Beach 91, Glendale 75--Kevin Beal led all scorers with 26 points and teammate Jamie Davis added 20 for visiting Long Beach in a nonconference game. Pat Thacker added 19 points for Long Beach, and only five players scored for the Vikings.
Kenny Collins led Glendale (1-4) with 19 points, and Mike Macchia added 18 points and seven rebounds.
BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Cleveland 84, Huntington Park 77--Senior forward Shawn Bankhead paced Cleveland with 32 points and the Cavaliers finished 3-0 to win the championship of the round-robin Birmingham tournament.
Senior guard Tooki Akinoyle added 16 points for Cleveland, which also recorded wins over Hamilton and Birmingham.
Joe Cuvarubia led Huntington Park (0-3) with 25 points.

Birmingham 53, Hamilton 43--Senior Raffi Kassabian scored a game-high 23 points to lead the Braves in their final game of their tournament.
Senior Greg Whiteside added 12 for Birmingham (3-1).

Grant 66, University 57--Powered by a stifling defense and six three-point baskets in the fourth quarter, Grant came from behind to win the nonleague game at University.
Darwin Alfelor (20 points) and Chi Chen 16 points) each hit three three-point shots in the final period as Grant (1-0) outscored University, 27-6, to win going away. Marc Scorza added 13 points for Grant.
“We just tightened up the defense and started to hit our outside shots,” Grant Coach Howie Levine said.
University’s Hassan Booker, who scored a game-high 28 points, including 12 in the third quarter, was limited to four free throws in the fourth period.
BOYS’ SOCCER
Granada Hills 2, Kennedy 2--Robbie Shapiro scored a goal with two minutes remaining to salvage the tie for Kennedy in the Northwest Valley Conference match at Granada Hills.
Granada Hills (4-2-1, 2-1-1 in league play) took a 2-1 lead midway through the second half when Josh Brenner scored on an assist by Danny Fong.
Renar Avanzing scored a goal in the first half for Kennedy (4-3-1, 3-1-1), and Angel Gomez did likewise for Granada Hills.
GIRLS’ SOCCER
Chatsworth 6, Kennedy 0--Mary Oades scored three goals to lead Chatsworth to the easy win in the Valley Conference match at Kennedy.
Erin Barry, Heidi Strauss and Melinda George each added a goal for the Chancellors (4-0, 4-0), the four-time defending City Section champions.
