Newport Corp. Loses $3.7 Million

Newport Corp., an Irvine manufacturer of precision equipment for the development of laser and optics technology, posted a net loss of $3.7 million, or 53 cents a share, for 1993, which included restructuring and other special charges totaling $5.1 million. Sales were $84.1 million. Because the company changed its fiscal year end from July 31 to Dec. 31 as of Jan. 1, comparable results are not available for prior-year periods. The fourth-quarter net loss was $4.7 million, or 67 cents a share, on sales of $19.9 million.
