Uncle Sam says thanks to Melrose Industries for buying American.
The small Huntington Beach company leases U.S. merchant ships to export its product: bulk paper used to make toilet and facial tissue. On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration will award the paper broker a certificate of appreciation during a ceremony on the Queen Mary in Long Beach.
“We give preference to American-flagged vessels,” said David Rose, president of Melrose Industries. “Supporting the American-flagged fleet is very important to the overall security of the country.”
In a national emergency, such as the Gulf War three years ago, the government can press American-flagged ships into service.
