Nation’s 40th Treasurer, Withrow, Is Sworn In

WASHINGTON — Mary Ellen Withrow was sworn in Tuesday as the nation’s 40th treasurer at a ceremony attended by her family and friends from Ohio. She and Treasury Secretary Lloyd Bentsen soon will place their signatures on crisp new bills.
Bentsen’s signature will replace that of former Treasury Secretary Nicholas F. Brady. Withrow’s signature will replace that of Catalina Vasquez Villalpando, who pleaded guilty last month to federal income tax evasion, obstructing an investigation into influence-peddling at the Department of Housing and Urban Development and conspiring to hide income she received from a former employer while serving as treasurer.
