A man suspected of stealing a motor home Thursday and later taking a car at knifepoint was arrested after a chase and crash, Brea police said.
Gerald William Maston, 25, of Costa Mesa was taken to the jail ward at Western Medical Center-Anaheim for observation after the stolen Honda Civic he was driving along Santa Ana Canyon Road hit a tree, left the road and landed upside down in an eastbound lane of the Artesia Freeway, authorities said.
The incident began when Brea police found a motor home that had been reported stolen earlier in Huntington Beach. It was abandoned and stuck in the sand at Featherly Regional Park.
While Officer Dave Wearp was investigating the motor home, a woman in a nearby home reported to police that a man with a knife had entered her home and forced her to give him cash and the keys to her Honda. Wearp said he saw a Honda driving by the park and pursued it along Gypsum Canyon Road. The Honda turned onto Santa Ana Canyon Road and accelerated before swerving into the tree.
