HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL ROUNDUP : Wolf Provides Lift for El Camino Real

Randy Wolf picked up where he left off last season, allowing one infield hit and one walk in El Camino Real High’s 11-0 victory over Birmingham in a first-round San Fernando tournament game Friday at El Camino Real.

Wolf threw a no-hitter and a perfect game last season in leading El Camino Real to the City Section 4-A Division championship.

Carlos Phino played the role of spoiler in the fourth inning, with an assist from Wolf.

Phino hit a ground ball between Wolf and third baseman Roee Meisels. Wolf knocked it down far enough from Meisels to keep him from fielding the ball and throwing out Pino.

Wolf, a senior left-hander, promptly picked off Phino.

Wolf also hit a two-run home run and a triple.

Michael Cooper broke the game open in the fourth inning with a two-run triple. He scored on Meisels’ double to give El Camino Real a 5-0 lead.

In other San Fernando tournament first-round games:

Cleveland 2, Franklin 1--Kelvin Delgado scored the winning run on a single by Tony Williams (three for five) in the 10th inning at Cleveland. Junior Brignac and Casey Roth each added two hits for Cleveland (1-0). Freshman Mike Schultz pitched five shutout innings in relief.

Granada Hills 4, Monroe 3--Jim O’Brien laid down a suicide squeeze to drive in the winning run in the seventh at Granada Hills. Josh Goldberg pitched a complete game to earn the win.

Kennedy 14, Grant 6--Kevin Serr had three hits and five RBIs as host Kennedy had 16 hits. Richard Prieto had two doubles.

Poly 12, San Fernando 4--Poly pounded out 13 hits at San Fernando.

South Gate 3, Van Nuys 2--The Rams squeezed home the go-ahead run in the seventh at Van Nuys. Jesus Bolivar and Fernando Navarette each had two hits.

In Westside tournament first-round games:

Camarillo 21, Loyola 3--Five players each had two hits for the Scorpions. Matt Buttell hit a two-run home run and Robert Smith stole four bases. Camarillo had six players with at least two RBIs.

Harvard-Westlake 5, Culver City 2--Scott Garson threw a five-hitter and Harvard-Westlake converted four hits, an error, two balks and three walks into five runs in the third inning.

Jeremy Rossman drove in the Wolverines’ first run with a triple and scored on a single by Jon Schaeffer. Singles by Dan Mason and Derrick Lemkin drove in runs.

Chatsworth 4, Notre Dame 3--In his first varsity at-bat, pinch-hitter Tony Ardito drove in Danny Phillips with a one-out sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to give the host Chancellors a victory.

Bryan McLure’s bases loaded single in the sixth sparked a three-run rally to give Chatsworth the lead after Notre Dame led, 2-0.

Montclair Prep 10, San Pedro 5--Jared Sandler pitched a complete game and drove in two runs and sophomore catcher Andrew Miller drove in three runs with two doubles at Montclair Prep.

Buena 2, Chaminade 1--Gabe Crecion pitched a four-hitter, striking out eight and allowing one earned run in a losing effort.

Santa Monica 2, Alemany 1--Alemany scored once in the seventh but left runners at second and third at Santa Monica.

Ventura 4, Canyon 4--The Cowboys scored the tying run on a dropped popup with two out in the seventh inning at Canyon. The game was called after eight innings because of darkness. For tournament purposes, Ventura was credited with a victory because it outhit Canyon, 7-5.

Brian Eggleston hit a three-run home run for Canyon and Robert Verestraeten hit a three-run shot for Ventura.

In El Segundo tournament first-round games:

Westlake 4, Narbonne 3--Brandon Zimmerman scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Westlake rallied at Moorpark College.

Narbonne had a drawn-in infield when Kevin McClure hit a ground ball past third base to score Zimmerman, who had two RBIs, two stolen bases and two hits.

Simi Valley 13, Alhambra 2--Bill Scheffels (three for four) ripped two two-run home runs to pace the Pioneers’ 14-hit attack at Simi Valley. Ryan Hankins (two hits, three RBIs) and Jeff Michael also homered for the Pioneers.

Royal 15 South Torrance 6--Adrian Mendoza had three hits and Maki Kramer drove in four runs as host Royal scored in every inning and finished with 15 hits.

Long Beach Wilson 6, Burroughs 1--The Indians were held to three hits at Long Beach Wilson.

In a Loara tournament game:

Newbury Park 4, Huntington Beach 2 (8 innings)--Keith Smith starred on the mound and at the plate, pitching a five-hitter, striking out four while not issuing a walk or allowing an earned run. He also doubled twice.

Shawn Adams hit a home run and a single, and Brian Collins had two sacrifice flies.

In nonleague games:

Nordhoff 6, Oak Park 6--Miles Robertson had two hits and two RBIs and sophomore Ben Blanton threw three scoreless innings in relief for visiting Nordhoff (1-0-1). The game was called due to darkness.

L.A. Baptist 2, Fillmore 0--Matt Hernandez went the distance, striking out six as the Knights won at home. Catcher Ryan O’Connell drove in both runs.

St. Francis 10, Hoover 4--Dan Bir was two for four with three RBIs for visiting St. Francis.

Bir hit a solo home run in the second to give the Golden Knights a 1-0 lead and he tripled in another run in the third. Steve Moratta had three hits for St. Francis.

Maranatha 8, Bell-Jeff 1--Victor Ayala was the sole bright spot for the host Guards, scoring on a passed ball after he hit a triple.
