OUTLOOK
Seven starters, six of them seniors, return from last year’s last-place team. The experienced, but not flashy, group has Nelson excited. “We may not have the best athletes; we don’t have anything to draw scouts,” he said, “but this is the best group we’ve had in a long time. I think they’ll play together. I think we’ll surprise people. The last championship we won at Bolsa (in 1984) was with the kind of team we have right here.” The team’s unmistakable leader is Baughman, a first-team all-league player in football and basketball. “The next day after basketball ended, he’s out here leading everybody,” Nelson said. Baughman, who led the county in passing yardage this year, hasn’t pitched since his freshman season, but he will be Nelson’s ace this year. “If we’d have pitched him the last two years, we could have done some damage to his shoulder.”
