The Bell High School wrestling team edged out the visiting squad from El Camino Real to repeat as City Section champs.
“We take a lot of pride in winning back-to-back championships because we haven’t been around for very long,” Bell Coach Frank O’Connor said of the school’s 4-year-old program. “The Valley schools wanted to win the title back but we wanted to keep it in the city, and we did.”
Of the seven wrestlers the Eagles placed in the Feb. 26 finals at Bell, Jose Gonzales (112-pound class), Ramses Ochoa (145), Frank Ordorica (171), Jesus Orozco (189) and Adolfo Padilla (heavyweight) won in their respective weight classes.
Orozco, whose victory in the City championship had been preceded twice by losses, was voted outstanding wrestler of the tournament.
Gonzales’ victory marked his third championship in as many years.
Gonzales, Ochoa, Ordorica, Orozco and Padilla advanced to this weekend’s State championship at the University of the Pacific in Stockton.
