Largemouth Bass Season Begins

The largemouth bass spawning season has apparently begun, as the fish are moving into the shallows to deposit their eggs. Meanwhile, fishermen are pulling in some fatter than average bass.

As expected, Ventura County’s Lake Casitas and Los Angeles County’s Castaic Lake are producing the most, but for the first time this season a lunker of a largemouth was landed at Irvine Lake, which is known primarily as a trophy trout fishery.

And a rainbow trout is what Moses Vasquez had in mind when he cast a glob of Power Bait while fishing near the island at the Orange County Reservoir. But when he reeled in his catch, it turned out to be a 10 1/4-pound largemouth, which was weighed at the bait shop and released.
