OUTLOOK
Ickes begins his 20th season as head coach of the Monarchs. Mater Dei will have a tough time winning consecutive league titles as it faces strong competition with its very young pitching staff. Harris is the only returning starter. After beginning last season at 4-0, Harris lost his remaining three games to finish 4-3. “If our pitching does well, we’ll be OK,” Ickes said. Starting shortstop Mattern is the “best player on the team,” Ickes said. Mattern, a senior, was a first-team all-league selection and the Monarchs will look to him for leadership. Treanor also returns. He will be behind the plate and should also help the offense. The Monarchs, who ranked as high as No. 4 in the nation last season, are trying to win the Newport Elks tournament for the second year in a row.
