OUTLOOK
In his 14th season at the helm, Canary hopes his team finishes atop the league standings this season after taking second in 1993; this should be the year the Dolphins can do it. They return six starters and have a promising bunch of newcomers. “We are a well-rounded club,” Canary said. “Our pitching and defense are both strong and we run well.” The Dolphins are led by Etherton, a senior who was All-Division I and a Times Orange County first-team selection last year. Etherton led the county in strikeouts with 102. He hit six home runs during the regular season. Maynard, a second-team all-league pick, will be behind the plate when he isn’t on the mound. Although only a junior, he’s a top Division I prospect. Toomey, a junior transfer from University, pitches right and will play in the outfield. “He’s a great player and a good prospect also,” Canary said. Richardson returns at shortstop. Whittaker, a second-team all-league selection, will be back at second base, and senior Ralph, also a second-team all-league pick, will return to center field.
