OUTLOOK
The Chargers return four starters from last season’s Sunset runner-up team, including two of the league’s best pitchers. Belitz, the team’s best power-hitter, is a hard-throwing lefty who shared league MVP honors with Fountain Valley pitcher Brian Ponchak. Surdock, a second-team all-league selection last season, also plays shortstop. “There’s not a better 1-2 combination than Belitz and Surdock,” Huntington Beach Coach Mike Dodd said. And Barilla, another lefty, gives the Chargers added depth. Said Harrell: “Of our 21 victories last year, we have pitchers coming back that had 16 of those.” Hanoian returns at the top of the lineup after earning first-team all-league honors as a sophomore. Robert Caton, a first-team all-league third baseman, graduated but Keyser will try to replace him. “We have the potential for a good year,” Harrell said. Sunset coaches agree, pegging Fountain Valley, Edison and Marina as the favorites.
