BURBANK : Low-Flush Toilets to Be Given Away

Burbank residents will be able to pick up free low-flush toilets today as part of a campaign to raise up to $12,000 for the city’s two public high schools.
“We get students to go out and sign people up,” said Donald Mauritz, a senior conservation adviser for the city of Burbank, which is offering the free commodes in cooperation with the Metropolitan Water District. “They do the legwork.”
For each low-flow toilet given away, the water district and the city will pay the schools $15.
From 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, residents will be able to pick up toilets at John Burroughs and Burbank high schools. The toilets use 1.5 gallons of water per flush instead of the typical 3.5 to 7 gallons.
Participants are asked to bring their old toilets back to Burbank High on March 26.
The old toilets are crushed and recycled for roadbed filler, Mauritz said.
Low-flush toilets can save residents 35 gallons of water a day or $35 a year.
