2,700 Held in Bombay on Bombings Anniversary

BOMBAY, India — Police have taken at least 2,700 people into custody as “a precautionary measure” on the anniversary of bombings that killed 257 people, police said Saturday.
On March 12, 1993, Bombay was rocked by 13 bomb explosions. Police blame the blasts on Muslim radicals taking revenge for the demolition of a mosque by Hindu zealots.
Most of those detained in the past 10 days are considered habitual offenders by police. They have not been formally charged but are being kept in police lockups.
