IRVINE : School District Seeks Anti-Violence Grant
- Share via
The Irvine Unified School District has applied for a grant to help middle school teachers prevent student violence on campuses.
The district would use the $4,000 grant to train teachers in various conflict-resolution techniques.
Some middle school teachers already receive basic training on ways to defuse fights among students and help them communicate constructively.
“This would take us to a higher level of violence prevention,” said Nancy Colocino, the district’s coordinator for guidance counseling.
The grant, from the National Foundation for the Improvement of Education, would pay for training on cultural differences and how they affect disputes among students, Colocino said. Teachers would also receive training on how to negotiate with students.
The district should know whether it would receive the grant later this year.
