Dan Quinn scored his first two goals of the season, one in each of the first two periods, to give the Ottawa Senators a 2-1 victory at San Jose on Thursday night.
The Sharks failed to add to their four-point lead over the Mighty Ducks in the race for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
Pittsburgh 4, Boston 2--Jaromir Jagr and Martin Straka scored on breakaways at Boston as the Penguins won their eighth in a row over the Bruins.
New York Islanders 3, Detroit 1--Derek King had two goals and an assist to lead the Islanders at Detroit and ruin the Red Wing debut of goalie Bob Essensa.
Quebec 4, Hartford 1--Garth Butcher and Mike Ricci scored short-handed goals at Quebec to help the Nordiques stretch their unbeaten string to seven games (5-0-2) and move within five points of the Florida Panthers for the final playoff position in the East.
New Jersey 6, Buffalo 1--Stephane Richer and Bill Guerin scored 28 seconds apart in the second period for the Devils at Buffalo.
