Dos Remedios Named as Coach of Burroughs

BURBANK — In a decision that was not popular with Burroughs High football players and a 13-member search comitteee, the Burbank Unified School District Board of Education named Robert dos Remedios as new head football coach Thursday night.
The board, after meeting in closed session, voted 5-0 in favor of a recommendation by Burroughs principal Tim Buchanan.
During the meeting, Burroughs quarterback Scott Boldvich spoke out in support of Burroughs assistant Pat Blackburn, the candidate the search committee voted 7-6 to support.
“We listen to this coach at least 25 hours a week,” Boldvich said. “We bond with him. The bond is basically between the players and Blackburn. The players should at least get an equal say at who’s the next coach.”
Buchanan said he chose Dos Remedios, 27, because he’s intelligent, has a lot of energy, knows the community and has five years of coaching experience at Glendale College.
The committee however, supported Blackburn, citing a concern that Dos Remedios had no head-coaching experience.
“Neither did Gary Bernardi,” said Buchanan of Dos Remedios’ predecessor, now an assistant at UCLA.
Dos Remedios, who will become the fifth Burroughs coach in four years, did not attend the meeting. Neither did Blackburn, who was contacted at home during the closed session.
“I don’t think I want to make a statement at this point,” said Blackburn, who was recommended by Bernardi.
“The players have voiced that they are supporting me and I have plenty of people in the community supporting me.”
