* What is Cal State Northridge teaching its students by planning to pay a $15,000 fee to a visiting poet (Valley Newswatch, March 10) while the classrooms in the portable trailers lack basic necessities, such as chalk, boards and trash cans? Are they supposed to feel better about substandard teaching conditions by listening to the “pricey poet . . . read some of her works?”
It seems irresponsible to keep telling the students that the university’s budget is strained to the limit, and then to turn around and incur an expense that is clearly a luxury.
Is the value of “living within one’s means” worth teaching any more?
