LONDON : A Jewel in the Tower
Queen Elizabeth II will open the new Jewel House at the Tower of London on Thursday.
Fiber-optic lighting and Italian-made glass showcases will let visitors have a closer look at the Crown Jewels, a major tourist draw, than before.
In the new showcases, some of the jewels will be within 18 inches of the viewing window. Previously, four feet was the closest distance.
The larger, heavier security Jewel House cost about $1.5 million to build and will accommodate up to 20,000 visitors a day. Admission is $11.
